From Monday, November 24, 2025 to Saturday, January 31, 2026, professional photographer André Dümmer will exhibit his work at Gallery Aaldering in Brummen. Title of the exhibition is: Westerwolde: a landscape of space, light and silence In the southeast of Groningen lies Westerwolde, a region of forests and heathlands, stream valleys, ancient villages and wide views, a relatively unknown historical area where the Ruiten Aa river still meanders freely through the landscape.
Professional photographer André Dümmer lives in this region. While walking and cycling, he crosses the landscape and captures the feeling of peace, space and light that makes Westerwolde so special. In this exhibition he shows the atmosphere and silence of this unique part of the Netherlands.
Westerwolde was once an island in the peat: a higher sand ridge, surrounded by extensive swamps. Only one ancient road crossed the area. This seclusion gave Westerwolde its own character and culture.
Burcht Wedde is located along this ancient route, from where the area was governed for centuries. Halfway along the road lies Bourtange Fortress, unique because of its pentagonal star shape. In the far south, hidden in the Ter Apeler forests, stands the only remaining rural monastery in Northern Europe: Dominus Lucis (House of the New Light).
Westerwolde is more than a landscape. It is a feeling and a place where space, silence and origin come together. A light that still reflects in the old country.
