Until March 27, Aalt Hijmissen from Ermelo is exhibiting at Gallery Aaldering. The theme of his exhibition is Still Shining. This concerns a large number of paintings of mostly classic American cars from the 1940s and 1950s. No beautifully polished, shiny cars, as the title suggests, but many vintage cars with a history, a story and, above all, a lot of rust!

Since his youth, Aalt Hijmissen has enjoyed drawing and working with wood. His grandfather, a passionate woodcarver at the time, recognized his talent and introduced him to woodcarving at a young age. He soon takes over his passion. Aalt wants to develop further and follows a 3-year course at the Vrije Academie in Nunspeet in the late 1980s. In addition to drawing, he mainly learns to work with clay, stone and bronze. He continues to enjoy working with wood and continues to have his preference. He comes into contact with a sculptor/woodcarver from Zelhem. There he enjoys following a course in 3D and relief cutting. His wood carvings can be admired at many addresses.

In 2013, a neck hernia forced him to work less physically. He picked up drawing again, but he also started painting a lot. He was attracted to start working with colours, took a number of painting courses and developed quickly. He gets his inspiration from the travels he has made in the United States. The vast nature and especially the classic cars from the 40s and 50s increase his enthusiasm for painting. These rust buckets may have lost much of their shine, but they appear to be a great source of inspiration for him. The titles of the works often refer to the phases he himself had to go through. Each painting is, as it were, a CAR biography.

He prefers to paint with acrylic on canvas. Before he starts painting, he first makes various sketches on paper. He translates this onto the canvas and applies the first colors with a thin layer of paint. This is followed by several layers with which he brings depth and life to the painting.

Especially for this exhibition, Aalt has delved deeper into the European car world. This is how he discovered the beauty of European cars from the 40s and 50s. The result is impressive. In addition to a large number of American vintage cars, there are also some beautiful English, French and Italian classics (Barn finds) to admire.
